The Enterprise Register and Its Contents

The enterprise register is a system of legal publicity for all businesses operating in Québec, regardless of their legal form. It is also a bank of public information made available to the general population.

The enterprise registrar files key information about businesses constituted or operating in Québec in the enterprise register. This information has legal force.

The public register was created in accordance with the Act respecting the legal publicity of enterprises, which is intended to protect the public and businesses in their socio-economic and business dealings by providing a public listing of registered businesses. As of January 1, 1994, all businesses operating in Québec are required to register.

Register contents
Québec enterprise number (NEQ)

The Québec enterprise number is a 10-digit number that is assigned to businesses that register with the enterprise registrar. The first two digits designate a business's legal form:

  • 11XXXXXXXX: Legal person
  • 22XXXXXXXX: Natural person operating a sole proprietorship
  • 33XXXXXXXX: Partnership, association or other group

Index of names List of a business’s current and previous names.
Index of documents List of documents produced by a business and filed in the register by the enterprise registrar.
